Airtable AI vs Claude Cowork

A plain-English comparison to help you choose between them.

01VERDICT

The deciding question is where your work already lives. Airtable AI operates inside the database that holds the records: summarising, classifying and automating against structured workspace data, feeding outputs into the processes and approvals built around them. Claude Cowork is an agent you bring to the work: it acts across the folders you choose and the apps you connect, carrying multi-step projects end to end with approval before anything significant. Pick Airtable AI when the records are the work and the structure already exists; pick Cowork when the work spans files, formats and tools that no single platform holds.

02AT A GLANCE

Side by side

Summary

Airtable AI brings generative AI directly into Airtable’s flexible database and workflow platform.

Best for
  • AI agents on structured business data
  • Automating record-heavy workflows
  • Building AI-powered internal apps
Cost
Freemium (Free tier + paid plans)
Ease
Openness
Hosted service
Data
Your bases stay under Airtable's enterprise terms, with admin controls over AI features. Agents act on live business records, so scope their permissions deliberately: an agent with edit access to the wrong table is an operational risk before it is an AI one.
Summary

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic work product.

Best for
  • Delegating multi-step work across real files and connected apps
  • Scheduled and recurring tasks that run unattended
  • Parallel workstreams that move a large project together
Cost
Paid only
Ease
Openness
Hosted service
Data
The data consideration with Cowork is operational as much as contractual: this is an agent with read and write access to real folders and connected accounts. Grant it the narrowest scope a task needs, keep approval gates on for anything significant, and review what it produces before it ships anywhere. Anthropic's data-handling and training terms differ by plan, so check the current policy for the plan in question before pointing it at sensitive client or company material.

04FAQ

Common questions

Records or documents: is that really the whole split?

Very nearly. Airtable AI's strength is repetitive intelligence over structured rows, at its best when workspaces are disciplined and processes defined. Cowork's is judgement across unstructured material, documents, spreadsheets, presentations and code, in the folders and apps you connect, with its working shown. Where your value sits between rows and files decides the purchase.

What does adoption cost each way?

Airtable AI presumes a workspace worth structuring, so the real cost is the process discipline that makes it useful; messy data starves it. Cowork comes included on paid Claude plans, but agent runs draw the plan's shared usage faster than chat, so delegation is a budgeted resource rather than an unlimited faucet.

Can they run the same operation together?

Comfortably, because they touch different layers. Airtable keeps the operational truth: records, statuses, approvals. Cowork does the excursions: assembling a report from a dozen files, preparing the deck, reconciling a folder against the tracker, then handing results back into the base. The pairing fails only when nobody owns which layer a task belongs to.
