ChatGPT Images vs Nano Banana (Gemini image)
A plain-English comparison to help you choose between them.
The same idea in rival ecosystems: image capability ambient inside the assistant. ChatGPT Images lives in ChatGPT on every tier, generating and editing conversationally with a selection editor for region work. Nano Banana is Google's counterpart, distinguished by how well it listens, instruction-following edits that do what you asked, legible text, and character consistency that holds a subject steady across a series. Pick ChatGPT Images when your working day already runs through ChatGPT and the image should arrive where the conversation is; pick Nano Banana when you live in Google's surfaces, or when edit obedience and a consistent character across images matter most.

Common questions
If both are assistants' image features, what actually differs?
Editing behaviour, mostly. Nano Banana's reputation is obedience: instruction-following edits that change what you asked and leave the rest alone, plus character consistency across a series. ChatGPT Images counters with its conversational refinement loop and selection editor. On raw everyday generation the two are closer than either fanbase admits.
Does ecosystem really decide this one?
More than any feature does. Each capability arrives inside an assistant you already use, priced with that assistant's tiers rather than as its own product. Switching ecosystems to get a marginally better image feature almost never pays; the honest advice is to use whichever assistant already holds your work.
What about the old DALL-E name people still search for?
DALL-E is gone as a product: OpenAI deprecated the models and removed them from its API on 12 May 2026. ChatGPT Images is the successor inside the assistant, with the GPT Image family serving developers. Anyone comparing DALL-E to Google's image tools is really comparing these two.
