Docusign
Docusign is the electronic-signature layer most agreements pass through, and increasingly the system around them. Documents go out for signature in a defined order, signers are authenticated, and every action lands in a certificate of completion that stands as the audit trail.
Its Intelligent Agreement Management platform extends that base: agreements are stored as searchable records rather than filed PDFs, and AI-generated summaries and question-answering, part of Docusign's Iris-powered agreement AI, read a contract back in plain language for the person being asked to sign it. Those summaries ship in eSignature itself rather than only in the wider platform.
Plans are per user per month, with a 30-day free trial that needs no card. It suits any team whose work has a moment of signature in it, which is most teams that sell, hire or contract.

Best for
- Sending agreements for signature with a defensible audit trail
- Signing order, reminders and expiry handled without chasing
- Plain-language summaries of an agreement before signature
- Storing executed agreements as searchable records
- Any workflow whose last step is somebody signing something
Less suited to
Docusign signs and stores agreements; it does not decide whether the terms are acceptable. Contract review, negotiation and legal judgement sit with the tools and people who do that work, and an e-signature platform will happily execute a bad deal quickly.
The economics reward regular use. For a handful of signatures a year the per-seat monthly cost is hard to justify against the free tiers built into many document and CRM products, and the AI features sit above the entry plan rather than in it.
Costs & data, in short
Per-user monthly plans across three published tiers, with a quote-only tier above them; the entry tier is a single-user plan and its rate is a floor rather than the usual one, and a 30-day trial runs without a card. Budget per signer who sends, not per person who signs, since recipients need no seat.
Executed agreements and their certificates of completion sit with the vendor as the system of record, and the AI summarising and question-answering features read contract content; retention, residency and who may query an agreement belong in the same procurement conversation as the signature workflow, not in settings afterwards.

In practice
How Docusign is used, area by area.
Jobs
Legal & compliance
The end of a contract's life is the part legal teams chase hardest: getting it signed by the right people, in the right order, with something defensible to point at afterwards. Docusign handles that step and then keeps the executed agreement searchable rather than filed, so the next question about what was agreed has an answer. AI summaries render the terms in plain language for the business signer.
Example tasks
- Send an agreement out in a defined signing order
- Return a certificate of completion as the audit trail
- Summarise an agreement in plain language for the signer
- Keep executed contracts searchable rather than filed
Real estate
An agent's deal dies in the gap between agreed and signed
An agent's deal dies in the gap between agreed and signed. Docusign closes it: offers, disclosures and tenancy paperwork go out for signature from the phone, signing order and reminders are handled without a chasing call, and completion leaves an audit trail that survives a later dispute. For a small agency it replaces the scan-print-sign loop that adds days to every transaction.
Example tasks
- Send offers and disclosures for signature from a phone
- Chase outstanding signatures with reminders rather than calls
- Keep a completion certificate for every transaction
Sales
A deal is not closed when the buyer says yes
A deal is not closed when the buyer says yes; it is closed when the signature lands. Docusign shortens that gap, sending the agreement in a defined signing order with reminders that do not require the rep to chase, and returning a completion certificate the finance team accepts. Executed contracts stay searchable, which matters at renewal.
Example tasks
- Send the contract in a defined signing order
- Return a completion certificate the finance team accepts
- Find an executed contract again at renewal
Tasks
Automation & agents
Signature is usually the step a process waits on
Signature is usually the step a process waits on, so it is worth automating properly. Docusign issues agreements from templates, routes them in order, chases with reminders and reports completion back, which lets the surrounding workflow continue without a person watching an inbox.
Example tasks
- Issue agreements from templates
- Route them in a defined order and chase with reminders
- Report completion back to the surrounding workflow
Presentations & documents
Documents that require a signature are a distinct species
Documents that require a signature are a distinct species, and Docusign is what they pass through. Signing order, authentication and a certificate of completion turn a PDF into an executed agreement, and the executed set stays searchable afterwards rather than becoming an email attachment nobody can find.
Example tasks
- Turn a PDF into an executed agreement
- Authenticate signers and record every action
- Keep the executed set searchable
