Bolt (StackBlitz) vs Claude Code

A plain-English comparison to help you choose between them.

01VERDICT

Bolt compresses the distance from idea to running code: the agent scaffolds a full-stack JavaScript app in the browser, a real runtime executes it instantly, and the live preview updates as you talk. Claude Code starts where Bolt ends, inside an existing repository, planning multi-file changes and running tests at refactor and migration scale. Pick Bolt to get a working prototype today with real code underneath; pick Claude Code when the codebase already exists and the work is changing it coherently. The honest boundary is production: Bolt's output still needs a developer's hardening, and Claude Code assumes that developer is already in the loop.

02AT A GLANCE

Side by side

Summary

Bolt builds, runs and deploys full-stack web apps from a prompt, entirely in the browser: the agent generates the project, a real runtime executes it instantly, and the live preview updates as you talk. Packages install in seconds and the terminal is right there when you want it.

It spans the modern JavaScript framework landscape, wires databases and auth through integrations, and deploys from the same tab. The in-browser runtime is the distinctive piece: no cloud VM, no local setup, just code running where you prompt.

More

It is a prototyping and building surface with real code underneath; production hardening remains a developer's job.

Best for
  • Full-stack web apps generated and running in the browser
  • Live preview that updates as you iterate by prompt
  • Modern JavaScript frameworks scaffolded from a description
  • Database and auth wired through integrations
  • Deploying the prototype from the same tab

Summary

Claude Code is a coding agent: point it at a repository and it reads the codebase, plans multi-file changes, runs commands and tests, and delivers coherent edits at refactor and migration scale. It runs on several surfaces, the terminal alongside IDE extensions, a desktop app and the web, and it is scriptable.

That shape suits delegation: features and fixes handed over as scoped briefs, parallel sessions working separate tasks, and agentic steps wired into CI and automation. It pairs with any editor workflow rather than replacing one.

More

Access is token-metered through paid plans rather than free-tier friendly, and the working style rewards developers who write clear briefs and review diffs properly.

Best for
  • Repo-wide refactors and large migrations
  • Delegating scoped features and fixes to an agent
  • Agent work in the terminal, IDE extensions, desktop and web
  • Parallel agent sessions on separate tasks
  • Scripted and CI-wired agentic coding

04FAQ

Common questions

Does Bolt produce code a developer can take over?

Yes, and that is the intended path: real projects on modern JavaScript frameworks, with a terminal right there in the tab and deployment from the same place. What it does not do is harden its own output, so security, error handling and integration depth still get an engineering pass before real users arrive.

Why choose a terminal agent over a live preview?

Because the repository, not the preview, is where mature work happens. Claude Code reads an existing codebase, plans changes across many files, runs the tests and returns reviewable diffs, all scriptable into CI. A live preview is the right feedback loop for creating something new; diffs and tests are the right loop for changing something real.

Where does each stop fitting?

Bolt is web-app shaped: work outside the JavaScript world, or teams with established repos and pipelines, will fit better elsewhere. Claude Code has no free tier and expects clear briefs and proper diff review, so it rewards developers and frustrates beginners. A founder with no code yet starts at Bolt; a team with a codebase starts at Claude Code.
