Common questions
Do I need separate subscriptions for each?
No: both live on paid Claude plans rather than as separate products. Cowork is included on every paid plan and draws on the shared usage pool faster than chat does; Claude Code's access is token-metered through the paid plans as well. The practical question is not which to buy but how much usage the plan tier needs to cover, which tracks how much you delegate to either agent.
Can Claude Cowork write code, and can Claude Code make documents?
Each can stray into the other's ground, badly enough to notice. Cowork handles code among its output types, but repository-scale engineering (coherent multi-file changes, tests run, migrations carried through) is exactly what Claude Code is shaped for. Claude Code lives in the terminal and works on repositories, which is the wrong shape for a board pack or a spreadsheet-heavy operations task. Use the shape that matches the work.
I'm in operations, not engineering. Which one is for me?
Cowork, without much of a contest. Its working pattern (a task briefed, multi-step execution in the folders and apps you choose, approvals before anything significant, scheduled and recurring runs) maps onto operational work: the weekly report, the data cleanup, the document pack. Claude Code rewards developers who write scoped briefs and review diffs; if you don't review diffs, it is not your tool.
