Common questions
Does Claude not search the web too?
It can, along with connecting to external tools and business systems. The difference is the default: Perplexity is citation-first by design, every answer arriving with numbered sources built for checking, while Claude reaches for search in service of a larger reasoning or drafting task. If verifiability is the product you are buying, the answer-engine shape wins; if synthesis is, the assistant shape does.
Which handles confidential material better?
Reasoning over documents you upload is Claude's home ground, with the standing caveat that personal plans can use conversations for training depending on settings, so client work belongs on commercial plans. Perplexity accepts files as evidence beside the web, and its own guidance is to check workspace and retention policy before anything client-confidential goes in. Neither replaces your engagement's data terms.
Is Deep Research a substitute for an analyst?
No, and Perplexity's own framing agrees: it assembles evidence, not judgement. Citations lower the risk of invention without removing it, sources vary in quality beneath a uniform presentation, and load-bearing claims still deserve the click through to the source. The synthesis into a recommendation, and the writing that carries it, is exactly the half of the job that belongs to a reasoning assistant or to you.
