Glean vs Perplexity

A plain-English comparison to help you choose between them.

01VERDICT

The whole decision is which corpus holds your answer. Glean indexes the organisation's applications and answers with citations, showing each person only what their permissions allow, so the knowledge sprawl across drives, wikis, tickets and chats becomes one queryable surface. Perplexity answers from the open web with numbered, checkable citations, and Deep Research turns autonomous reading across hundreds of sources into a structured report. Pick Glean when the answer already exists inside the company and nobody can find it, and Perplexity when it exists in the world and you need it current and cited; most organisations of any size eventually want both, because those are genuinely different questions.

04FAQ

Common questions

Can Perplexity cover internal knowledge with uploaded files?

Partly, and the limit matters. Uploaded files join the web as evidence and Spaces organise ongoing work, which covers a project's documents well. What it cannot do is span the estate under each person's permissions, which is Glean's entire architecture: connectors, indexing and permission-aware answers across every application at once, not a folder someone remembered to upload.

What scale does Glean assume before it is worth it?

Enterprise scale, explicitly. The connectors, indexing and governance assume hundreds of seats and a real IT function, and the procurement matches. Below that, workspace-native AI covers most of the need at a fraction of the ceremony, and a small team buying Glean is buying an operating model rather than a search box.

What quality problem do both share?

Neither invents good sources. Glean's answers inherit the estate's hygiene, so stale documents produce well-cited stale answers. Perplexity's citations lower the risk of invention without removing it, since sources can be misread or thin. In both cases the citation is an invitation to check rather than a guarantee, and load-bearing claims still deserve the click.
