Glean vs Slack AI

A plain-English comparison to help you choose between them.

01VERDICT

Estate search against the workspace's own memory. Glean indexes the organisation's applications, drives, wikis, tickets and chats, and answers with citations while respecting each person's permissions, one queryable surface over the sprawl. Slack AI reads a single corpus natively: answers from the workspace's message history, channel recaps, thread summaries, bundled by Slack plan tier rather than sold separately. Pick Glean when the answers live across many systems and permission-aware citations are the requirement; pick Slack AI when the candid knowledge your team actually needs was said in Slack, and the question is whether estate search is necessary at all.

02AT A GLANCE

Side by side

Summary

Glean is enterprise search that respects who you are: it indexes the organisation's applications and answers questions with citations, showing each person only what their permissions allow. The knowledge sprawl across drives, wikis, tickets and chats becomes one queryable surface.

Its Work AI direction builds on that foundation: assistants and agents grounded in company knowledge, with the permission-awareness that makes enterprise deployment survivable.

More

It is bought at organisational scale: the indexing, connectors and governance assume hundreds of seats and a real IT function.

Best for
  • Search across the organisation's applications at once
  • Permission-aware answers that respect access rights
  • Cited answers grounded in company content
  • Assistants and agents on the same governed foundation
  • Organisations drowning in knowledge sprawl

Summary

Slack AI is the intelligence Salesforce has built into Slack itself, which the vendor currently frames simply as AI in Slack: answers searched out of the workspace's own history, recaps of channels and threads, and summaries that turn a noisy day into a paragraph. It is not a separate product to install; capabilities are bundled by Slack plan tier.

One naming distinction matters to buyers: Slack AI is not Agentforce. Agentforce is Salesforce's separate agent platform, which can surface inside Slack, while Slack AI is the workspace's own search, summary and recap layer. The catalogue keeps the Salesforce platform's AI under its own entry.

More

For teams whose working memory lives in Slack, the pitch is direct: the knowledge is already in the channels, and Slack AI makes it answer questions.

Best for
  • Answers drawn from the workspace's own message history
  • Channel and thread recaps after time away
  • Turning long threads into decisions and follow-ups
  • Teams whose institutional memory lives in Slack
  • AI capabilities bundled with the Slack plan rather than bought separately

The AI reads your workspace's own message history under Slack's existing permissions and Salesforce's terms; what it can answer is decided by what the workspace already holds, not by a new data pipe.

04FAQ

Common questions

Do we still need Glean if Slack AI answers from our channels?

It depends where your organisation's truth lives. If decisions, specs and records sit in drives, wikis and tickets, Slack AI cannot see them and estate search earns its keep. If the working knowledge genuinely lives in Slack, its own AI answers a surprising share of questions at no extra product's cost.

How do the two handle permissions?

Both respect them, differently scoped. Glean's whole design is permission-aware indexing across systems, showing each person only what they may see, with citations. Slack AI inherits Slack's own access model: it answers from channels and history the asking user can already read. Neither creates a new data exposure by default.

Is running both wasteful?

Often it is sensible. Organisations with a wide enough estate deploy Glean as the estate-wide layer and leave Slack AI on for the conversational corpus it reads natively, where recaps and thread summaries need no connector. The overlap is narrow because the corpora barely overlap; the budget question is real but the products rarely collide.
