Common questions
Can Copilot answer analytics questions from spreadsheets?
It can build and explain spreadsheet analyses, which covers a great deal of everyday work. What it cannot do is answer from a governed semantic layer where definitions are agreed and permissions decide what the AI may say. A number produced from whichever file someone attached is a different artefact from a number produced from the model the company reports on.
Which is the bigger prerequisite purchase?
Tableau AI, comfortably. It is a premium layer on a premium platform, so teams without the Tableau estate, or without the premium editions the AI requires, are outside its case entirely and the investment question precedes the capability one. Copilot sits behind a licence on a Microsoft plan most organisations already hold, which is much of its appeal.
What limits the answer quality on each?
On Tableau, the semantic layer: it answers only as well as the model beneath it, so undefined or contested metrics produce confident nonsense with governance attached. On Copilot, tenant hygiene and scope: it surfaces whatever permissions allow, and it is the governed workhorse inside Office rather than the specialist in heavy statistics.
