Which one does a single researcher actually want?
Gemini Notebook, without much hesitation. Its free tier is generous enough for real work, notebooks persist so a project's material becomes a living queryable body, and the audio and video overviews genuinely help with dense reading. Glean is an organisational purchase with connectors and governance behind it, which does nothing for one person's reading list.
Does the permission model matter if everything is already shared?
Less than you would think it does, and that is a real argument for the simpler tool. Glean's permission-awareness earns its cost where access genuinely differs across the company, which is most enterprises. A flat organisation where everyone sees everything is paying for governance it does not need, and a grounded notebook over the same documents answers the same questions.
How do the two fail?
