Common questions
Do they compete at all for one budget?
Rarely head-on, and naming that is the useful finding: an organisation buying tenant-grounded assistance is not solving external research, and a researcher buying citations is not searching SharePoint. The budget collision happens only at the individual level, one professional choosing a single assistant, where the split falls on whether their questions point inward or outward.
How does answer trust differ?
Both demand the same scepticism from different angles. Copilot's grounded answers inherit tenant hygiene: stale SharePoint and loose permissions produce confident answers from the wrong document, and grounded is not verified. Perplexity's citations lower invention risk without removing it, since source quality varies beneath a uniform presentation. In both cases the click-through, to the file or the source, remains yours.
What does the licensing picture look like?
Structurally different. Most of Copilot's value sits behind a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence on top of a qualifying plan; the free assistant in Windows and Edge is a general chat companion, not the tenant-grounded product.
