Why is n8n so much cheaper at volume?
Because self-hosted n8n has no per-task meter at all: you pay for a server and run what you like. Zapier prices by tasks, which is effortless at low volume and increasingly expensive as automations multiply. The trade is that n8n's savings are funded by someone owning the infrastructure.
Which has better app integrations?
Zapier, decisively, on breadth: its catalogue covers thousands of apps including the long tail of niche tools. n8n covers the mainstream well and compensates with generic HTTP and code nodes that can reach almost anything, given technical effort. If a specific obscure app must connect today, check Zapier first.
Which should a startup choose?
Default to Zapier for speed unless a technical founder actively wants ownership: early automations should cost minutes, not evenings. Revisit when the task bill grows painful or data control tightens; by then you will know your real volume and whether the n8n migration pays. Starting on n8n suits engineer-led teams.
