The studio design stack
For design teams that need control, brand training and commercial safety, not just output.
Design as controlled infrastructure. An open-weights image pipeline you can train on your own brand and run on your own hardware, with the composition control closed tools do not expose; AI inside the design tool where product work actually happens; and commercially safe generation with licensed training data behind it for the client-facing work that carries legal weight. The trade is setup: this stack has a real pipeline to own.
The stack, step by step
- 01
Stable Diffusion
Own the pipeline: brand-trained, composition-controlled generation on your own hardware, at volume, without per-image fees.
Swap options- Flux (Black Forest Labs) when frontier quality with open weights matters and the capability tier can be chosen per workload, API to local See the comparison
- Leonardo AI when hosted fine-tuning and consistency tools deliver the control without running your own pipeline See the comparison
The open pipeline generates brand-trained imagery at volume, with composition control and no per-image fees; Figma AI is where that material meets product design. Generated assets land in real design files, alongside first-draft screens produced on your own design system.
- 02
Figma AI (Make / First Draft)
Design in context: AI inside the product design workflow, where interfaces and systems live.
Swap options- Uizard when the need is rapid ideation from sketches and screenshots rather than drafts on a production design system
Figma AI drafts inside the product design workflow; Firefly covers the generation that must be defensible. Licensed training data and enterprise indemnification stand behind the client-facing work, and generative editing inside Photoshop and Illustrator handles the finishing.
- 03
Adobe Firefly
Generate safely: licensed training data and indemnification for the work that must be defensible.
Swap options- Midjourney when the aesthetic ceiling outweighs indemnification and the imagery will not carry legal weight See the comparison
- Recraft when the assets are icons, illustrations and editable vectors generated repeatedly on a defined brand style
What it costs
The open pipeline is free to licence and costs hardware and skill; the design and safety layers are professional per-seat subscriptions. Budget the capability-building, not just the software.
| Tool | Entry tier | What drives cost up |
|---|---|---|
| Stable Diffusion | Free | Self-hosting is free (you pay only for hardware/GPU). Hosted per-image credit pricing applies via the Stability API or partner platforms. Business commercial use above the $1M revenue threshold requires an Enterprise licence. |
| Figma AI (Make / First Draft) | Free tier + paid plans | Figma's AI capabilities, including Make, come with paid Figma plans, with allowances varying by tier. For teams already paying for Figma the increment is modest; it is not sold standalone. |
| Adobe Firefly | Free tier + paid plans | Creative Cloud subscriptions include Firefly credits; standalone Firefly Pro ($19.99/mo) adds Photoshop on web/mobile; Premium ($199.99/mo) for high-volume production. |

Common questions
What does this stack actually cost per month?
All three tools here have a genuine free tier, so a working configuration costs nothing while you evaluate it. The 03 COSTS table above breaks down each layer's pricing. The meters differ by layer: the pipeline's real cost is hardware and the skill to run it, or hosted per-image credits; Firefly's credit allowances and Figma's AI allowances by tier climb with use. Budget the capability-building of owning the pipeline as much as the seat costs; the build, not the software line, is where this stack asks most.
Do I need all three tools from day one?
No. The two hosted layers carry most teams. Start with Firefly for defensible client-facing generation, and bring in Figma AI where product and interface design actually lives. The numbered steps are workflow order, not adoption order: build the Stable Diffusion pipeline last, once volume, brand training and composition control justify owning the hardware and the skill to run it. That build is the stack's commitment, not its starting point.
I already use Adobe Firefly. What changes?
Then the commercially safe layer is already yours: licensed training data, indemnification on the plans that include it, and generative editing inside Photoshop and Illustrator. You can defer any second safe-generation tool. What this stack adds is what Firefly does not reach: an open pipeline you train on your own brand, run on your own hardware, with community composition-guidance tools such as ControlNet, plus Figma AI where product design lives.
Where do these tools overlap, and which wins?
Stable Diffusion and Firefly both generate images, the one real overlap. The dividing rule is legal weight. Firefly wins where the work must be defensible: licensed training data and indemnification, on the plans that include it, are what stand up in a dispute. Stable Diffusion wins where you need brand-trained volume, composition control and ownership of the pipeline itself. A self-hosting licence is not ownership of the model, and it is not indemnification either; route legal or brand risk through Firefly, keep volume work on the pipeline.
When is this stack too much?
Often, and this tier says so plainly. The Stable Diffusion pipeline only repays its hardware and capability-building when you generate at real volume, train on your own brand, and need composition control beyond what a hosted tool offers. Below that, the two hosted layers carry most of the value, no pipeline to run. A team reaching for this to own infrastructure, not for the volume that justifies it, wants the competitive tier, the professional design stack.
What can I safely put into these tools?
The floor is set by the hosted layers; the self-hosted pipeline keeps its brand-training data on your own hardware. Before confidential brand or client material enters shared work, put Figma AI on the enterprise plan for admin controls over AI features, and Firefly on the Creative Cloud for teams or enterprise plan that carries indemnification. With Firefly, avoid prompts naming real IP. The pipeline's gate is legal, not data: clear the commercial-use licence above the revenue threshold first.
Before sharing confidential or personal data, check this tool's data-governance and training policies. They differ between providers and can change.
