The solo founder starter stack
For founders doing every job at once, on a budget that notices.
Four tools cover the unglamorous majority of early company-building: thinking and drafting, decks that raise money and close deals, a brand that looks real, and the automation that replaces the operations hire you have not made. Nothing here needs a technical background, and everything earns its keep in the first week.
The stack, step by step
- 01
ChatGPT
Think and draft: the everyday operator across copy, analysis, email and the ten unrelated jobs a founder's day contains.
Swap options- Claude when the heaviest daily work is long documents, analysis and strategy rather than breadth across images and voice See the comparison
- Google Gemini when the company already runs on Gmail and Docs and a capable free tier inside Workspace covers the assistant job See the comparison
ChatGPT drafts the outline, the numbers and the narrative; Gamma turns that outline into a structured, styled deck in under a minute. The handoff is plain text: what you refine in one becomes cards in the other, so a fundraising deck never starts from a blank slide.
- 02
Gamma
Present: pitch decks, investor updates and sales one-pagers at the pace fundraising and selling actually demand.
Swap options- Beautiful.ai when decks need brand-consistent, design-safe slides from non-designers rather than web-native cards See the comparison
Gamma owns the deck; Canva owns everything else the company publishes, from social content to landing imagery, held to one brand kit. The division is format: web-native cards for the narrative moments, templates and resizing for the assets that repeat weekly.
- 03
Canva (Magic Studio)
Look real: brand kit, landing imagery and social content from one subscription, no designer required yet.
Swap options- Microsoft Designer when quick free graphics suffice and the business already sits inside Microsoft 365 See the comparison
- Photoroom when the visual workload is mostly product photos that need cleaning and restaging rather than layouts See the comparison
Once the brand assets exist and customers start arriving, Zapier wires the operational tail together: signups, payments and leads moving between tools through no-code triggers. The first three tools make the company look real; this one keeps it running while the founder does every other job.
- 04
Zapier
Run itself: signups, payments and leads wired between your tools so the busywork happens without you.
Swap options- Make when automations outgrow single triggers and need branching, loops and friendlier pricing at volume See the comparison
- Lindy when the jobs to hand over are judgement-shaped, such as inbox triage and scheduling, rather than fixed trigger-action flows See the comparison
What it costs
Every tool here has a workable free tier; the whole stack runs on modest monthly subscriptions when you outgrow them, and each upgrade decision can be made independently.
| Tool | Entry tier | What drives cost up |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Free tier + paid plans | Plus ($20/mo) for individuals; Business (~$20–25/seat/mo) or Enterprise (custom). |
| Gamma | Free tier + paid plans | Pro (~$15/mo annual) for client-facing analytics/branding; Ultra ($100/mo) only for very high deck volume. Plus (~$8/mo) if you do not need analytics/custom domains. |
| Canva (Magic Studio) | Free tier + paid plans | Pro (~$15/mo) for solo/creator design; Business (~$20/user/mo, 3-seat min) for teams needing multiple brand kits and admin. Commercial rights require a paid plan. |
| Zapier | Free tier + paid plans | Professional ($19.99/mo annual, 750 tasks) for typical SMB ops; scale up as task volume grows; Team ($69/mo annual) for multi-user ops. |

Common questions
What does this stack actually cost per month?
All four tools here have a genuine free tier, so a working configuration costs nothing while you evaluate it. The 03 COSTS table above breaks down each tool's pricing. Two meters climb with use: ChatGPT's message and file caps, and Zapier's per-task billing. Zapier's tends to bite first as automation grows, which is itself a sign the business is working. Each upgrade is an independent decision, not a bundle.
Do I need all four tools from day one?
No. ChatGPT alone covers thinking, drafting and most of the odd jobs an early company throws up, and many founders run on it for weeks. The numbered steps double as the adoption order: bring in Gamma when a deck is actually due, Canva once publishing turns regular, and Zapier the moment you catch yourself repeating an admin task.
I already use ChatGPT. What changes?
Then you own the thinking layer already, and the stack is mostly the three tools around it. Your existing plan covers drafting, planning and first-pass research for all of them, so there is nothing to duplicate. What the stack adds is production: Gamma turns outlines into decks, Canva into brand-ready assets, Zapier does the repetitive admin. Keep ChatGPT as the hub.
Where do these tools overlap, and which wins?
Gamma and Canva both make visual content, the one real overlap here. The dividing rule is format. Gamma owns anything that reads as slides: a pitch, an update, a proposal, built from a prompt in seconds. Canva owns the rest: social posts, one-pagers, brand assets, where templates and the brand kit matter more. The Gamma and Canva comparison, linked above, covers the finer calls.
When do I outgrow this stack?
Two signals. When one general assistant can no longer hold the context your work needs: longer documents, more careful reasoning. Then a single model is the ceiling. And when selling starts to matter as much as building, you need real outbound and a CRM, not just automation. Both point to the competitive tier, the build-and-sell stack.
What can I safely put into these tools?
Treat all four as semi-public on their free tiers: consumer plans may train on what you type unless you opt out, so keep customer data and credentials off them until you upgrade. ChatGPT excludes training on its paid business tiers; Canva goes further: Business, Teams and Enterprise content is never used for AI training, with no opt-in to switch that on.
