What does this stack actually cost per month?
Two of the three tools, Power BI Copilot and Tableau AI (Pulse / Agent), are quote-based enterprise platforms with no list price; Microsoft Copilot has published tiers. The 03 COSTS table above breaks down what each vendor publishes. Two of the meters here are platform commitments, not add-ons: Power BI Copilot rides on Microsoft Fabric capacity, and Tableau's AI assumes a full Tableau deployment underneath; the communication layer then prices per seat. Fabric capacity is the entry decision that bites first, so budget the procurement cycles as much as the spend.
Do I need all three tools from day one?
Rarely, and this stack inverts the usual question: you adopt the AI layers where the platforms already sit, so what you already run decides the order. The numbered steps are that adoption order. Start with Power BI Copilot where the governed semantic models live; add Tableau's layer when metric owners need proactive digests of what changed; license Microsoft Copilot last, to carry the numbers into documents and meetings.
I already use Microsoft 365 Copilot. What changes?
Then Microsoft Copilot already carries the communication layer: drafting, summaries and tenant-grounded recall inside the documents and meetings your organisation already reads. What it does not do is analytics. This stack adds the governed BI Copilot cannot reach: Power BI Copilot generating and explaining DAX over your semantic models, and Tableau's visual exploration and Pulse digests on top. Keep Copilot as the surface for the discussion; put governed answers behind it.
Where do these tools overlap, and which wins?
Power BI Copilot and Tableau AI both put AI over governed data, the one real overlap here. The dividing rule is the job. Power BI Copilot wins inside the Microsoft estate: conversational reports, DAX generated and explained over the semantic models on Fabric. Tableau AI wins on exploration and storytelling: visual analysis of what the numbers are doing, with Pulse pushing metric owners a digest of what changed and why.
When is this stack too much?
Often, and this tier admits it. Enterprise-governed BI only repays its procurement and rollout overhead when the numbers genuinely must stay permissioned inside the tenant: regulated reporting, board-facing figures, data that cannot leave existing controls. A team that wants strong analytics and AI assistance, but is not carrying that governance burden, is buying contracts it will not use. That team wants the competitive tier, the professional data stack.
What can I safely put into these tools?
More than on a consumer assistant, provided the tiers are right. All three keep work inside your governance: Power BI Copilot in the Microsoft tenant, Tableau inside Tableau and Salesforce governance, and Microsoft Copilot, at its enterprise or business tier, under existing permissions and excluded from foundation-model training. That paid tier is the floor for confidential figures; a consumer plan is not. The subtler risk is accuracy: agree the KPI definitions Pulse narrates, and keep human review on board-facing numbers, since a fluent summary can hide a weak one.
